Make Your Own Effective Herbal Toothpaste and Mouthwash

tooth 5Toothpaste is easy and fun to make.  It tastes great too and does wonders for your teeth.  I am afraid the toothpaste at the store is less than healthy.  Fluoride is not the same thing as fluorine, the natural occurring mineral, and is actually a byproduct of the aluminum industry.  It’s a bit toxic, y’all.  That is why they say on the package not to let children swallow it.  Add in some artificial sweeteners and other unidentifiable ingredients, and Lord, it’s dangerous to brush your teeth!  you could go all natural with the expensive holistic brands but they don’t clean teeth very well.  Let’s just run to the cupboard and make our own, shall we?

In an 8 ounce canning jar add 1 part baking soda to 1 part softened coconut oil.  Add 1 teaspoon of peppermint essential oil and a few drops of cinnamon essential oil.  I like to add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for flavor as well.  Now, mix it up well.  There, wasn’t that easy?  Coconut oil contains saponin, which is essentially soap.  The baking soda whitens and cleans.  The oils are anti-viral and anti-bacterial, and they freshen your breath.  The toothpaste tastes good and it really works!

If you would like to make your own mouthwash, that is easy as well.  In a pint sized canning jar add several leaves of sage, a dandelion root with a few leaves, and a good sized sprig of mint or lemon balm.  Fill half way with vodka and let sit in a window for two weeks.  Then fill the rest of the way with fresh water.  Swig and swish after brushing.  This blend is anti-bacterial, anti-biotic, anti-viral, anti-gingivitis, anti-bad breath, and so easy to make!
